How Do I Deal with Bees in My Surroundings?

November 30, 2017 by cynthia

How Do I Deal with Bees in My Surroundings?

Bees are nature’s primary pollinators. Bees pollinate almost a third of the world’s crops. They are crucial to maintaining the balance of the ecosystem, and without them, a vast variety of plant life would just disappear. These tiny insects shoulder a lot of environmental responsibility and have been doing so for millions of years. So what would you do if you came across bees in Bronx?

While their role in the natural environment is immense and irreplaceable, it is not uncommon to come across a bee colony in any building. Bees make their presence felt even amidst the concrete human-made jungles.

“Chew on this: Bees contribute 24 billion dollars to the US economy!”

What would you do if you came across a bee colony? No doubt that approaching it directly, it would be risky, foolish and dangerous. Bee stings send almost half a million people to the hospital every year.

It is essential for one to be able to identify the type of bee to decide what course of action to take. Approaching an environment-friendly pest control to manage a bee situation is the best possible choice.

Mentioned below are the most common types of bees:

Bees in Bronx: Bumble Bees

Bumble bees are beneficial insects that are covered in fuzz and are black and yellow in color.

They are about an inch long and build their nests on the ground. Do bumble bees sting? Yes, if the nest is threatened, the bumble bee will come to sting you (multiple times, even)

Bees in Bronx: Carpenter Bees

They look like bumble bees but are black and have shiny abdomens. Carpenter bees make their nests in decaying or rotting wood.

These bees rarely sting but can cause structural damage to buildings. Carpenter bees are vital pollinators.

Bees in Bronx: Honey Bees

These orange-brown bees are the most popular of all bees. They produce honey (which is their food for the winter) by traveling considerable distances to collect nectar from hundreds of flowers.

Honeybees are highly social insects that are not aggressive. They only sting if their hive is disturbed or attacked.

How are honey bees important for the ecosystem?

Honey bees have a significant role in the maintenance and balancing of the ecosystem. They are known for their production of honey and beeswax, but their role as chief pollinators is what keeps the ecosystem going.

Plants need honey bees, and honeybees need plants. Honey bees are the guardians of the food chain. They are also the propagators of biodiversity. The alarming rate at which these little nature workers are disappearing is a huge threat to the stable functioning of the ecosystem.

Without bees, we would lose a large chunk of plant species, which in turn would affect many of the animal species. All in all, the absence of bees would impact every stratum of the food chain and will have disastrous consequences for the survival of life on Earth.

Sounds a bit scary, doesn’t it? It is, therefore, essential to know how to deal with these little insects if you come across them in your home or surrounding areas.
